Do you like summer reading challenges?
I sometimes wonder if they take the fun out of reading by turning it into homework. My kids enjoy them, though, so we usually sign up with one of our local libraries.
Several years ago, most of the reading challenges focused on how long kids read.
These days, the challenges focus more on consistency. Can kids read for at least 45 days over the summer?
So I decided to create a summer reading challenge of my own!
I thought it would be fun to challenge kids to read a variety of STEAM-related books. Then, after kids read a book on a specific topic, they can check it off on the card!
I’ve also created a time card to help you track how much time your children have spent reading.

If you’d rather track the number of days, just fill in one circle per day instead of tracking time.
You can download both the challenge and the reading log here.
If you like this bingo card, I’ve also created other cards with more specific topics. Do you have kids interested in space exploration, biology, geology, or other science topics? These bingo sheets will give you ideas for different topics you can read about for each of these topics.
You can get the extra material, along with a coloring page/certificate for the challenge here or from Teachers Pay Teachers.
You can also check my other book lists for picture book recommendations and reading suggestions.

UPDATE May 2026:
Coming August 2026! Can a Rock Grow?
I’ve been working on some earth-shaking updates to Can a Rock Grow? (Or, at least some fun changes!) This book is a unique look at the rock cycle.
It helps kids explore geology and learn more about some fascinating stones.
