Five years ago, I published the second book in my Early Science Questions series. Can a Rock Grow? gave kids a unique look at the rock cycle, while also celebrating the fun, fascinating rocks that attract rockhounds young and old.
It’s one of my most popular books, as well as one of my favorites.
After using Can a Rock Grow? as a NGSS earth science text for several years, though, it was time for some updates!
Now the 2nd edition is ready! It will be available August 18th, with new illustrations and updated text.
If you’ve seen the previous version, you may recognize some of the images. Other images look completely different (but with hidden Easter eggs, as a call back to the original art!).
I love using Can a Rock Grow? for STEM workshops when I visit schools. It shows how rocks change over time, so it fits right into the 2nd and 3rd-grade units on geology and the rock cycle.
For my last few class visits, we’ve also done scratch tests and a modified version of the acid test. (I’ve actually added two rock identification activities to this new version of the book.)
Sometimes the class is a little shy about volunteering for the first activity, but after that first activity, everyone wants a chance to try!
