Audrey Sauble is a children’s author and science illustrator with a passion for exploring nature through picture books. She started writing picture books several years ago after her oldest asked a question that turned into a conversation.
Audrey loves to spark kids’ curiosity and wonder through her work. She’s the author of Acorn Party: A PNW Counting Story and several other nature-themed picture books. multiple picture books and several activity books. Her new release, Can a Rock Grow?, is the third book in her Early Science Questions series.

Q: What inspired you to write this book?
A: Can a Rock Grow? was largely inspired by a rockhound neighbor we had when I was growing up. I wasn’t a science kid, but this neighbor introduced us to both obsidian and thundereggs. Those rocks fascinated me, and eventually I started asking questions about rocks. That led to the big question behind this book: Can a Rock Grow?.
Q: What makes this book different from other children’s science books?
A: Can a Rock Grow? is a rather unique look at the rock cycle and all kinds of rocks. I’ve seen some fabulous books that tell the story of one individual stone, but this book celebrates the wild diversity of shapes and colors you can find with rocks.
Q: Why release a second edition?
A: I’ve been using Can a Rock Grow? in STEM workshops for several years. Over that time, I noticed a few issues with the text that I wanted to adjust. I’ve also learned a lot about art since working on my first couple books, so I wanted to update the illustrations.
Q: What is new in the second edition?
A: The main change is the illustrations. I joke that I’ve finally learned how to draw people, but I’ve added so much energy and color to this edition. I’m really excited about how the illustrations turned out.
Q: How does the book support STEM learning?
A: First of all, Can a Rock Grow? is really a book about curiosity—about asking questions and noticing things about rocks and how they change over time. It’s also a book that fits into the Earth Science units for STEM standards. It shows different ways that rocks change (fast and slow), as well as the main types of rocks (sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic). It’s not a textbook, though. It just shows these things in a way that teachers can then tie back to their curriculum.
Q: How can parents encourage scientific curiosity at home?
A: The best way to encourage curiosity is by example. If you notice something, point it out and ask a question about it. You can find so many new things just at a park or walking through your neighborhood. Books are a great way to learn too! We almost always have a stack of library books about nature and science around.
Q: If a child reads this book and then picks up a rock in their backyard, what do you hope happens next?
A: I hope they’ll notice something new about it, something they might have overlooked before. And then, I hope they’ll start asking questions about it and noticing even more about it!
